The leader of Germany's Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Alice Weidel was unanimously selected as the AfD's candidate for chancellor at the party's conference. This comes amid Elon Musk's support for her as Germany prepares for its national election on February 23.

The AfD officially nominated co-leader Alice Weidel as the party's candidate for chancellor, with Weidel thanking delegates for “defying the left-wing mob and getting here."

"People really need to get behind AfD, otherwise things are going to get very, very much worse in Germany," Musk has previously said about the party. "I think Alice Weidel is a very reasonable person. Nothing outrageous is being proposed."

Musk has previously expressed disdain for current German leadership, referring to President Frank-Walter Steinmeier as a “tyrant” and calling for Chancellor Olaf Scholz's resignation. Following a Christmas attack by a Saudi man who drove a car into a crowd, Musk criticized Germany’s lax immigration policies and declared on X, "Only the AfD can save Germany."

Polls show that the AfD has around 20 percent support in the lead up to the elections in February as German leaders are refusing to work with the party, the Guardian reported.

Weidel got a boost from Musk on Thursday, when used his platform on X to urge German voters to back her, per Reuters.

In their conversation on the platform, Musk introduced Weidel and highlighted their shared concerns about Germany's "crazy" energy policies, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and immigration challenges.

Weidel responded in English, expressing gratitude for Musk's support and noting that their conversation marked the first time in a decade she had been given an uninterrupted platform to discuss issues without bias from media outlets.

"People love to censor things they don't agree with," Musk commented.

The two discussed Musk's difficulties navigating Germany's regulatory process during the construction of Tesla's plant in the county, with Musk criticizing the extensive bureaucracy.

They also touched on energy policy, with Musk criticizing to reduced gas supplies from Russia.

"When I saw that Germany was turning off the power plants after being cut off from gas supplies from Russia, I thought ... this is one of the craziest things I've ever seen," he said.
