BREAKING UPDATE: Three children dead, 9 injured in mass stabbing at Taylor Swift-themed dance class in UK

On Monday, at least eleven children and two adults were injured in a mass stabbing at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport, England, a town about 19 miles north of Liverpool. Three children have succumbed to their injuries.

The sole suspect, a 17-year-old boy, was arrested shortly after the attack on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. No motive has yet been determined, though Merseyside Police have stated that it is "not currently being treated as terror-related."

According to the BBC, the incident took place shortly after 11:30am at the Hope of Hart children's club on Hart Street, which was packed full of elementary school-aged kids taking part in the Swift-themed program. When police arrived on scene, they apprehended the suspect and took him into custody. A knife believed to have been the weapon used was also seized.

Before long, Hart Street was filled with first responders administering aid to the victims. Those who needed further care were taken to nearby hospitals. Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool declared a major incident, and warned parents only to bring their kids to the emergency room if it was "urgent" as the facility was "extremely busy."

During a press conference, Chief Constable Serena Kennedy confirmed that two children had passed away, and that of the nine injured, six are in "critical condition." A further two adults are also in "critical condition."

In a post on X, Merseyside Police Commissioner Emily Spurrell said there was "no wider risk to the public," and urged people to "be careful about what they share online and not to speculate about this incident."

Norwood Councillor Greg Myers said a police officer told him at the scene of the incident that a child had died after the attack. When asked to confirm to the UK Press Association, he stated, "That is my understanding of the situation."

A number of politicians offered their condolences to those impacted by the attack and praised law enforcement for their actions. Among them was Home Secretary Yvette Cooper.

"I know the whole House will be very concerned at the extremely serious incident that has taken place in Southport," she said in Parliament, per the BBC. "All of our thoughts will be with the family and loved ones of those who are affected." She went on to commend Merseyside Police for their "swift and courageous response."

Merseyside Police officials are expected to provide an update in the coming hours.
