Taiwan's Foreign Minister: China Likely to Ramp up Diplomatic 'Attacks'

Taiwan's foreign minister said Wednesday that China is likely to escalate its diplomatic "attacks" on Taiwan as a follow-up to last week's twice-a-decade congress. This would likely include taking more of Taiwan’s few remaining diplomatic allies, according to the Jerusalem Post.

The outlet also reported Taiwan's foreign minister Joseph Wu said in a report to parliament that he expected Beijing to ramp up its "security threat and diplomatic suppression" on the island, which is claimed by China as its own territory over objections by Taiwan.

Wu added that Taiwan has received intelligence and "signs" from diplomatic allies that China was increasing efforts to convince the island's allies into switching official recognition to Beijing which says Taiwan has no right to state-to-state ties. Under Wu's term, six countries have already switched official recognition from Taipei to Beijing.

Only 14 remaining countries officially recognize the Taiwanese government, which includes mainly developing and poor countries in the Caribbean, Latin America, and the Pacific.

Beijing and Taipei have accused each other of luring countries into creating ties with them.

China has increased military and diplomatic pressure in an attempt to force Taiwan to accept Chinese rule. However, Taiwan says that only the 23 million on the island should decide their future.

The island nation’s government added that since Taiwan has never been ruled by China, its sovereignty claims are void.
