On the Sidewalks of New York: The Truth about Fossil Fuels

On the Sidewalks of New York is a weekly feature at Human Events wherein Jacqueline Toboroff, a native New Yorker, will share her observations and candid commentary on the goings-on in our nation’s largest city. Wherever you live, and whatever you feel, there is no escaping the fact that New York City matters.

The holy warriors of the religious cult of climate change should be whisked away to the nearest psych ward for evaluations and put on an FBI terror watch list. Acting as foot soldiers for globalists in order to amass and retain power in a scheme apparently only afflicting the West, (China, Russia, and India aren’t playing ball, though certainly benefitting from our insanity), eco-nuts are wreaking havoc, schools are promoting the globalist’s scheme, and taxpayers are footing the bill to fight paper dragons.

In late March, 2022, an eco-zealot hurled a cake at the Mona Lisa. The man arrived by wheelchair wearing a wig and lipstick.  Once inside the Louvre Museum in Paris, he leapt into action, first trying to smash bullet-proof glass and then settling for smearing it with the cake. Mid July, 2022, three Italian environmental activists glued their hands to Botticelli's Primavera in Florence, Italy’s Sala Botticelli of the Uffizi Gallery. They were from the climate activist group Ultima Generazione ('Last Generation') and unfurled a banner reading, “Last Generation No Gas No Coal.” Mid October, 2022, oil activists threw a tin of Heinz tomato soup at Van Gogh’s Sunflowers at the National Gallery. Then, the two activists, Anna Holland, 20, and Phoebe Plummer, 21, glued their hands to the wall.

But the most oxymoronic protest was staged in New York City in September, 2021; climate warriors held a “die-in” outside New York City Hall. A die-in. "If the City Council does not take action to move off fossil fuels, more people could die and more communities will be devastated," said Eric Weltman, senior organizer with Food & Water Watch. "The science is very clear on that point", said Weitzman.

What is clear is that energy, which is between 90 and 100 percent dependent on fossil fuels, has lifted Western civilization out of poverty and into the highest standard of living known to man in history. Air conditioning, heating, traveling, shelter, and more than ⅔ of companies on the New York Stock exchange rely on oil or derivatives of oil.

Here’s what else is clear, under former ousted New York Governor Cuomo, the most aggressive climate change plan in the nation was adopted; $33 billion dollars over the course of 5 years to combat Climate Change, protect the environment and create resilient communities. Current New York Governor Hochul is using taxpayers’ money to make a $500 million investment in off-shore wind energy development and increased by $4 billion the Environmental Bond Act.

Despite Hochul recently passing a $200 billion dollar “budget”, activist groups and economic geniuses are dissatisfied; “She’s proposing a continuation of the status quo of small incremental improvements in small programs that don’t amount to the response that the crisis requires,” said Pete Sikora, climate campaigns director for New York Communities for Change.

So, let’s go over the results. Government and unelected bureaucrats' insistence on masks during the COVID pandemic created 7,200 tons of medical waste daily; the majority of it, disposable masks. According to website MIT News, “if every health care worker in the United States used a new N95 mask for each patient they encountered during the first six months of the pandemic, the total number of masks required would be about 7.4 billion, at a cost of $6.4 billion. This would lead to 84 million kilograms of waste.” As of the end of 2020, an estimated 1.6 billion disposable masks polluted the oceans and threatened marine life across the planet. It’s uncannily predictable that the same loco group worshiping masks and polluting the oceans would fail to note the contradiction.

As per the Daily Mail, Greenpeace implies the American recycling system is “a sham.” In 2021, just 5% of the 51 million tons of plastic waste generated by American households was recycled. But here is the kicker, recycling might actually be bad for the environment. “Most plastic products contain toxic chemicals.  When they are broken down during recycling or incineration, these toxins – everything from endocrine disrupters to cancer-causing chemicals – can escape recycling facilities and landfills to contaminate people and the environment.”

Here’s where we’re at so far; the Left has created a threat to marine life and poisoned oceans via mask worship and by recycling plastic, has potentially unleashed carcinogens.

Now, let’s move on to renewables. Since the government is in charge, it’s not going well. New York is rationing heating oil in preparation for this winter. There are multiple factors but it all comes down to the Left’s bungles; supply issues, going from energy dominant to dependent, to the Biden led and funded war in the Ukraine.

As it stands approximately 5% of New York state’s grid runs on wind and solar. The problem; our nincompoop Democrat leaders have set the financial commitments and made their claims. By 2030, New York must derive 70% of its electricity from renewable sources; wind, solar and hydropower. By 2040, the entire grid must be carbon-free. By 2050, the state seeks to eliminate 85% of its carbon emissions to reach net-zero.

Caring about the environment is great and making strides to keep it clean and running is perhaps possible under a free-market Capitalist approach involving competition and innovation spearheaded by the public sector. The problem; the government and climate warriors are anti-business and want to do away with the free market.
