On the Sidewalks of New York: Boldly Throw the Bums Out

On the Sidewalks of New York is a weekly feature at Human Events wherein Jacqueline Toboroff, a native New Yorker, will share her observations and candid commentary on the goings-on in our nation’s largest city. Wherever you live, and whatever you feel, there is no escaping the fact that New York City matters.

On Oct. 18, James O’Keefe from Project Veritas put out a teaser on social media that put many in New York City on tenterhooks. It was a photo of a poster affixed to a subway entrance that said; “Part 1. Tonight. 7pm. NYC Mayor EXPOSED.”

What now? Could things be any worse? Before getting to the exposé, here’s what New York City residents already know.

New York City is on life-support. This is a partisan claim - a Democrat one! 74% of New York City residents say crime is “a serious problem”; what’s interesting is that mathematically, this number represents a minimum of 50% of the Democrat electorate in New York City!

There has never been a more radical and disappointing Mayor in New York City’s history than Eric Adams. He was woefully misrepresented by mainstream media as a “moderate” and even endorsed by the NY Post’s editorial board on May 10th, 2021. Adams seemingly took cues from Biden; a noticeable basement campaign strategy ensued. When mugging in front of the camera, he spoke incoherently. Not just regarding half-baked ideas never fleshed out and quite frankly was never asked to expand upon - he was linguistically challenging to understand.

The little that was clear was Adams was race-obsessed. The brief respite from yammering on about race, systemic racism, social justice, and equity, came in the form of occasionally insisting on being pro-law and order citing years spent as a police officer. To anyone who bothered to do any research, those years were fraught with controversy and a problematic reputation amongst his peers on the force. A video of him bragging about kicking “cracker’s ass” was only one of the blemishes.

Together with Governor Hochul, Adams has ruined New York City by all metrics; crime, economy, and education are all worse than even under DeBlasio and Cuomo. The damage these two have wrought is so profound, even if by the grace of G-d Republicans are elected in New York and New York City this November 8th, it might be insurmountable to fix.

Regarding the economy, food prices have gone up 13% from last year. Gas is approaching $5 per gallon. Mortgage rates have gone from 3.7% last year to 7.14%. Then there’s the education complex. Pre-pandemic, it was a disaster. Post-pandemic, it’s a nightmare, so ghoulish that city officials refused to release the results of their own assessments of student performance from last year. New York taxpayers spend the highest in the nation per public school student annually, $28,000, and they’re in the bottom half of the country for reading and writing. If that’s not galling, this is; because of Adams and Hochul laying out the welcome mat to illegals, they will now be absorbed into the failed school system. This will drain every resource and speed the race to the bottom. Finally, crime; year to date, major crime is up 36% in New York City.

So how are Adams and Hochul not just status quo terrible elected officials destroying their backyard like so many other Democrat leaders? Illegals. The sheer amount that they have beckoned has forever changed the landscape - as was their intent. Mayor Adams said while campaigning, that he was a proponent of allowing non-citizens to vote (approximately 900,000). This was even too radical for DeBlasio - it’s ILLEGAL.

Even before the Project Veritas video came out, New Yorkers saw illegals greeted with concierge service at bus stops before being whisked away to $400 a night Manhattan hotel rooms. This is a terrible optic under any circumstance but made all worse by New York’s current situation under the auspices of one-party Democrat rule.

As New Yorkers struggle to pay rent, buy baby formula, tampons, chicken, and milk, contend with forgoing Christmas and Chanukah presents, let alone take a trip and stay in a $400 a night hotel room, Adams (and Hochul) have been clear.

They. Do. Not. Care.

Adams and Hochul have chosen criminals above constituents. Whether they’re illegals (criminals by definition which is why they look to shape-shift the name to migrants, asylum seekers, dreamers) or legal criminals, these two will make every unconstitutional concession. Continuing to employ Manhattan DA Bragg, bail reform, downgrading criminal charges, defunding and demoralizing police, taxpayers footing the bill for $220 million dollars of Medicaid to illegals, hotel accommodations, education, school supplies, school, housing, food, clothing, legal representation, and cell phones.

Now, to Project Veritas’ exposé confirming what those paying attention suspected. Adams is spineless. He can’t or won’t do anything to prevent illegals - because too many staffers will resign. There is no amount of incoming too high or a number too great that will activate a cut-off.

They’re all allowed in with the goal of eventually allowing them to vote and get them counted in the census so New York can pick up seats in the House of Representatives.

There are three weeks until the Nov. 8 elections. We must elect gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin. Here’s how; not only must the 74% who say crime is “a serious issue” hit the polls, they must bring friends. What about cheating? With help from Cleta Mitchell, we’ve done outreach to enlist poll watchers in New York. The polls look good but we can’t afford to be complacent; polls are frequently wrong. The only poll that matters is game day and certification.

Here are the nuts and bolts. Crime is the biggest issue polling at 45% followed by the economy (jobs, inflation, and taxes) at 38%. Every other concern trails dramatically; this includes the reversal of Roe v Wade and climate here in Democrat enclave New York City - that’s how bad things are, we don’t have time for paper dragons.

Finally, New York City is in need of boldness in the Right direction. Zeldin has promised on Day 1 to fire Bragg. He will have the power as Governor to fire dangerous and derelict Adams as well.
