Time's Ana Marie Cox (formerly of "Wonkette") relays to readers of the magazine's
"Swampland" blog the running joke between her husband and her about the "upsides" of a Giuliani presidency, his penchant for liberal social policies:
It's a standard grim joke in the Cox-Lehmann household to theorize about the upsides of a Giuliani presidency: guns would be illegal, there'd be Dupont Circle-type* drag races on the White House lawn, gay marriages in the National Cathedral**, and, of course, free abortions for everyone. And, what do you know, funny because it's true...
Cox then quoted from Giuliani's recent defense of taxpayer-funded abortions before quipping, "Fred Thompson, please answer the red courtesy telephone," alluding to the recent buzz among conservatives about the "Law & Order" actor and former Tennessee senator.
A liberal blogger like Cox gets it: Giuliani's a liberal on many issues and the Republican base has a right to be wary of his stances on the issues.
The question remains whether the mainstream media will continue to insist that Giuliani is "moderate" even though he's far to the left of his party.
*DuPont Circle, for those outside the Beltway, is D.C.'s gay neighborhood.
**The way the Episcopal Church is going that wouldn't be surprising regardless of who's in the White House.
