Leon H. Wolf over at
RedState blogs that, "CNN is reporting that
Sam Brownback has locked up the support of Iowa Right to Life director
Kim Lehman ..."
This is big news because (if history is a predictor), cultural conservatives will play a major role in determining who wins the GOP Iowa caucus.
But, as they say, "money is the mothers milk of politics." My concern with Brownback continues to be that he either cannot -- or will not -- ask donors for money. Failing to build a war-chest to match his grassroots strength in Iowa would be a classic example of a missed opportunity (it would also be a strategic mistake to put off fundraising on the assumption that money will magically appear if he wins Iowa).
A few weeks ago, I offered unsolicited advice to Gov.
Mitt Romney. He either took my advice, or it was a huge coincidence. Either way, he's better off today.
In that same spirit, I'm offering some unsolicited advice to Sam Brownback. Here goes:
Dear Senator:
Congratulations on your great strides in Iowa.
I know (from personal experience) that grassroots conservatives sometimes take great pride in their under-funded, underdog status. They also rationalize that -- because of their grassroots support -- they don't need to raise much money. Please don't make that mistake and squander this opportunity.
It will literally take
tens of millions of dollars to have a legitimate chance at this. (I know you won't raise as much as some of the other candidates, but you don't have to. But you do need to raise enough to compete).
So here are my recommended action items:
1. Hire a top-notch political fundraiser ... immediately.
2. Next, personally ASK every proven political donor you can find for money. (You should spend AT LEAST 50 percent of your time raising money).
3. Repeat step 2.
