Mitt Romney's Pro-Gay Stance View All of The Ballot Box Posts

Today's New York Times pokes a big hole in Mitt Romney's efforts to portray himself as the conservative alternative to John McCain:

Mr. Romney’s standing among conservatives is being hurt by a letter he sent to the Log Cabin Club of Massachusetts saying that he would be a stronger advocate for gay rights than Senator Edward M. Kennedy, his opponent in a Senate race, in a position that stands in contrast to his current role as a champion of a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

“We must make equality for gays and lesbians a mainstream concern,” Mr. Romney wrote in a detailed plea for the support of the club, a gay Republican organization.

I wonder what the folks at NRO think of this ...

I fail to see how his being tolerant of his fellow citizens makes Romney less conservative. Bigotry is most certainly not a conservative value. Traditional conservatives have never supported bigotry towards any subset of the American population.

The same cannot always be said of the lunatics who have been driving the bus in the Republican Party these past few years. But then they aren't really very traditional conservatives are they?

It has nothing to do with tolerance; it has to do with whether or not political candidates are misrepresenting themselves to get elected. How can a candidate say that Ted Kennedy isn't pro-gay enough -- and then try to run as a social conservative, when it becomes more convenient to his career? If a candidate wants to take liberal positions, that's fine, but you can't have your cake and eat it too.
