The
AP is reporting that
Sam Brownback is in the race for president. For some reason, I'm not stoked. Why, you might ask?
In recent years I have become very concerned with the new brand of "purpose driven," mega-government compassionate conservatives (of which Sen. Brownback seems to belong). Aside from the fact that I disagree with them on some fiscal issues (
Mike Huckabee is a prime example of this), I also have a suspicion that some of them hope to slowly move us away from opposing things like same-sex marriage, in order to be more (you guessed it) compassionate. (
I'm not accusing Brownback of having this motive!)
Still, I fear that there are some who have infiltrated this movement in order to convice conservative Christians to support liberal causes such as illegal immigration, radical environmentalism, etc. (Again, I don't believe that is Sen. Brownback's intention). But calling oneself a compassionate conservative implies that other conservatives aren't compassionate. It also seems disingenuous; watching a recent television interview with
Rick Warren, Barack Obama, and Sen. Brownback, I found myself thinking that Obama is the one I trust the most.
