There are primary elections in nine states tomorrow, meaning we'll be quite busy throughout the day and well into the evening analyzing the races.
The biggest race -- Rhode Island's GOP primary -- pits populist
Steve Laffey against liberal Lincoln Chafee. Over at National Journal's
Hotline, editors Chuck Todd and John Mercurio both think Laffey has a chance to knock off the incumbent. However, only Mercurio picked Laffey to take the big prize. (
Watch them debate on HotlineTV.)
In Arizona's 8th District -- where a crowded Republican field includes top contenders Randy Graf and Steve Huffman -- it's really anyone's guess who will win. For the record, Todd is picking Graf, while Mercurio has faith in Huffman, the National Republican Congressional Committee's favored pick, as our Political Editor John Gizzi
reported today.
Finally, there's the Democratic primary in Maryland to determine who will challenge Republican Michael Steele for the U.S. Senate seat. The best hope for former NAACP leader Kweisi Mfume seems to be that white voters will be split among Rep. Ben Cardin, Josh Rales and Allan J. Lichtman. But with Rales and Lichtman getting drawing little support in polls, and Cardin moving to the left to win over the base, there may be no stopping him from picking up the nomination.
UPDATE -- 4:25 p.m.: I almost forgot to mention the results of our own poll last week about who would win the Rhode Island primary.
Steve Laffey: 82.94%
Lincoln Chafee: 14.69%
Not sure: 2.37%
