Last night HUMAN EVENTS Legal Affairs Correspondent Ann Coulter was a guest on Neil Cavuto's Fox News show to talk about Sen. Lincoln Chafee, the liberal Republican she blasted in her column this week.
During the interview, Coulter called Chafee "an idiot," a charge she backed up by Chafee's pitiful performance during his debate with GOP primary challenger Steve Laffey. (We wrote about the debate earlier in the week, noting Chafee's opposition to the death penalty for Osama bin Laden.)
However, Cavuto took exception to Coulter's characterization. Here's the exchange, which starts around 2:10 in the video from YouTube.
Coulter: "He's just an idiot..."
Cavuto: "No, no, no, careful. He's not an idiot."
Coulter: "No, he is. Have you seen the debates?"
Cavuto: "You said some very mean things..."
Coulter: "Have you seen the debates? Because I’ve been watching the debates."
Cavuto: "Now that's a little unfair. You said 'that Lincoln Chafee is a Democrat is Lincoln Chafee. As the expression goes, if Chafee switched parties, the average IQ on both sides of the aisle would go up.' That's a little mean."
Coulter: "No, it's accurate."
It appears that Neil Cavuto has been drinking a little too much of Liddy Dole's Kool-Aid.
If the independent poll is right and Laffey wins by crushing Chafee, great. The side benefit is that it greatly boosts his chances of being the winner in November. It could also lead to huge national publicity that will cause a surge of online fundraising from people excited about changing Washington’s business as usual.
Even before the poll, it looks to us like Laffey thinks, and is acting like, he is going to win. We think he is being a little too confident.
I think Neil is just a really nice guy who thinks that the strong language describing Lincoln Chafee by Ann Coulter was truly mean. I happen to disagree with him, and think Ann is right on (as usual), but I certainly do not think that Neil is an apologist for Chafee.
Neil is a good guy and does a good job. His personality doesn't allow him to say or accept anything offensive towards anyone else.
I saw the interview and enjoyed it. Ann was able to make her point, and made it very well. You can't ask for much more than that in an interview.
The best thing I got from it is that I now know about Lincoln Chafee, and fully agree with Ann's assessment of him! Thanks Ann!
There has to come a point where conservatives are going to stand on their beliefs or not. President Bush campaigned for Arlen Specter in Pa. and has thrown his support behind Lincoln Chafee aganst two candidtaes with true conservative credentials. Chafee votes against the Republicn agenda at every given opportunity and boasts that he did not even vote for Pres. Bush in the last election. What good is a majority made up of Republicans who act like and side with the liberal MoveOnocrats. All candidates like Chafee accomplish is to allow the opposition and the media to say "look even your own party agrees with us." Win or lose, freedom and security loving Republicans should turn their backs on the likes of Lincoln Chafee.
I agree with you w.dillon. I am from Pennsylvania and am very upset with both President Bush and Senator Santorum for siding with Arlen Specter over Pat Toomey. It may be a big reason why Santorum is fighting for his political life right now.
When are politicians going to stop being so political and just stick to true conservative ideals? Ann Coulter gets it right when she says that whenever the conservatives lean to the center to gain votes it is disasterous for them.
I'm interested in your opinion of whether or not Neil Cavuto is an apologist for Lincoln Chafee. What say you?
