Blog Row: Doolittle and Hensarling on Taxes and Spending View All Capital Briefs Posts

Representatives John Doolittle (R.-Calif.) and Jeb Hensarling (R.-Tex.) made the case that Republican economic policies are working, even though you'd be hard pressed to hear about it from the mainstream media.

Doolittle, a founder of the conservative Republican Study Committee, cited two numbers that he said tell the story about economy. He said the Bush tax cuts have resulted in a:

• 14% increase in federal tax revenues last year
• 11% increase in federal tax revenues this year

Hensarling said those statistics prove that the problem with the federal deficit has nothing to do with cutting taxes, but rather the inability to control government spending.

Hensarling pointed the finger at Democrats, who he said consistently offer amendments that would boost government spending -- most of which are always defeated by Republicans -- and then turn around and accuse Republicans of being fiscally irresponsible.

Doolittle summed it up this way about the good economic news:

It's not by accident, it's by Republican policies.
