Newsweek’s Susannah Meadows does her best this week to ridicule Tom Monaghan for his dream to build a new community near Naples, Fla., known as Ave Maria, a place that lives and breathes by the Roman Catholic Church.
Complete with its own university and 11,000 homes for families, Ave Maria is being bankrolled entirely by Monaghan, who made his fortune as the founder of Domino’s Pizza.
But even before Meadows can tell Newsweek readers the story of Ave Maria, she gets sidetracked by the preposterous idea that Monaghan would, for some bizarre reason, want to prohibit pharmacies in the town from carrying contraceptives.
You see, Planned Parenthood and the ACLU of Florida are already vowing to do something about it, so it’s only natural for Newsweek to follow suit.
(Seems to me that if you’re going to live in a place that’s devoted to the Roman Catholic faith, then you probably don’t need to worry about the pharmacies not carrying contraceptives. But leave it to Planned Parenthood and the ACLU to say otherwise.)
As our esteemed HUMAN EVENTS columnist Mac Johnson remarked today: “What do you bet this town will have low crime, high test scores, good neighbors, a healthy rate of reproduction, and be sued every day that it exists by the ACLU?”
You’re probably correct, Mac. Good thing Monaghan has a lot of money, and as he told Newsweek, “I believe all of history is just one big battle between good and evil. I don't want to be on the sidelines.”
Sounds to me like he’s ready for this fight.
