Two moderate Republicans, Rep. Steve Pearce (N.M.), who hails from a border state, and Rep. Chris Cannon (Utah), tonight slammed their colleague, Rep. Tom Tancredo (R.-Colo.), on the issue of immigration reform. Pearce and Cannon made appearances on Blog Row following the State of the Union address.
“Tancredo is appealing to a very small group of people,” Pearce said in response to my question about
Tancredo’s criticism of the president’s remarks about a guest-worker plan in
tonight’s speech.
Added Cannon, who is notoriously soft on the immigration issue: “Tancredo is wrong on that point.”
Pearce said Bush did a “good job” on immigration, including his comments supporting a guest-worker program. (In his speech, Bush said: “We must have a rational, humane guest worker program that rejects amnesty.”)
