Chicago mayor appeals to the “values” of gang-bangers

For some inexplicable reason, Chicago is a bloodbath of gun crime, even though it has extremely strict gun control laws, imposed through generations of one-party Democrat rule.  Liberal theories all maintain that Chicago cannot possibly exist, but like Detroit, it stubbornly insists on doing so.

The current Democrat in charge of Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, finds himself taking a lot of heat for the city’s skyrocketing murder rate – 275 murders so far this year, which represents a 30 percent increase over 2011, according to CNS News.  Part of his strategy for dealing with gang violence involves boarding up or demolishing the abandoned buildings where gangs congregate.  It’s hard to understand why a city that has enjoyed decades of unbroken, monolithic Democrat governance would have so many abandoned buildings – why would anyone want to leave?

Another part of Emanuel’s strategy, revealed in an astonishing CBS News interview on Monday, involved pleading with gangsters to aim more carefully when they open fire on each other, to minimize the collateral damage:

“We’ve got two gangbangers, one standing next to a kid. Get away from that kid. Take your stuff away to the alley. Don’t touch the children of the city of Chicago. Don’t get near them,” pleaded Barack Obama’s former chief of staff.

Referring to the horrible June murder of seven-year-old Heaven Sutton, who was selling candy near her house when she was gunned down in a gang-war crossfire, Emanuel continued, “And it is about values. As I said then, who raised you? How were you raised? And I don’t buy this case where people say they don’t have values. They do have values. They have the wrong values. Don’t come near the kids — don’t touch them.”

(Emphasis mine.)  That entire statement is so desperately foolish that I fear readers may injure themselves with especially forceful face-palms.

The other elements of Emanuel’s program, which included moving more cops onto street duty, will hopefully result in some success.  Appealing to the “wrong values” of gang-bangers probably will not.  “Gun control means using both hands” is a red-state bumper sticker, but it’s Chicago’s official advice to the armed thugs swarming its streets.
