Federally subsidized arugula, the Iowa caucus edition

Remember when the President, attempting to posture himself as the champion of the middle class, famously complained about the rising price of arugula at one of the nation’s most luxurious supermarkets?

Quoth the faux granola-cruncher-in-chief: “Anybody gone into Whole Foods lately and see what they charge for arugula?” the Illinois senator said in 2007. “I mean, they’re charging a lot of money for this stuff.”

That was Barack nearly five years ago while seeking his Party’s nomination, before pulling off his unexpected victory in the Democratic Iowa Caucus. He then promised that an Obama presidency would lower skyrocketing food costs, which, admittedly, was less ambitious than his other promises of healing the planet and preventing ice from melting.

And whaddya know, he actually fulfilled a campaign pledge. No, the price of food isn’t lower today than it was prior to Obama taking office. In fact, the food index is higher. The fulfilled pledge to Iowans comes by way of ObamaCare, which funneled $327,500 in “grants” to “help the Scott County Health Department promote wellness and good health habits in the area,” reported the Quad-City Times right before the start of the New Year.

The massive taxpayer “slush fund” that is ObamaCare carves out such funding for “wellness” activity under the rubric of “preventative care.” As the White House’s line of reasoning goes, bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. have the sagacity and expertise to help 300 million Americans make healthy life decisions about their lives better than those people do. So in the case of Iowa, Scott County now is bequeathed with taxpayer money to make “roads and paths more amenable to bike riding and walking” as well as to promote “community gardens and the wide availability of locally grown fruits and vegetables.”

Come to think of it, we have no idea if this will lower the cost of healthy foods, and considering Obama’s expired promises to date, expect the price of leafy greens to soar. More 2008 talk remains in limbo.

But, Whole Foods is finally opening up a branch in Iowa, so Mrs. Obama at least has a place to shop for overpriced fruits and nuts in between zipping around the country on her carbon-spewing campaign plane.

As one GOP insider remarks, “So at a time when the federal government is running trillion-dollar deficits, ObamaCare is using taxpayer dollars to fund projects to help reduce the price of arugula and other vegetables in Iowa.”

Pretty much.

Preventive services, by the way, were exactly the cover Democrats hid behind to tuck millions of dollars into ObamaCare in order to build jungle gyms on playgrounds across America.

And the Left wonders why healthcare costs are climbing north. It’s even gotten to the point that the Administration is touting the fact that that they’ve been able to force insurance companies to lower the rate of increase if it exceeds 10 percent. Recall that it was candidate Obama who vowed that having the government take over one-sixth of the economy that is healthcare would actually lower premiums by $2,500.

Now the White House brags when premiums don’t increase past 10 percent. Moving the goal posts much?

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, premiums for families and individuals have risen by nine and eight percent, respectively. “The 9% growth rate in family premiums for 2011,” estimates the Foundation, “is significantly higher than the 3% growth rate in 2010.”

Get ready for Nancy Pelosi arguing that if it weren’t for Messiah Obama, costs in healthcare would be 25 percent higher. Because liberals never want themselves judged on the actions resulting from their policies. Nope. They want to be evaluated on their intentions solely.

Enjoy the fancy veggies after the caucus tonight, dear Iowans. After all, we’re all helping to pay for them!
