The Second 09/11
I was there on 9/11: as a First Responder, I had the misfortune to witness and respond to Al Qaeda’s attack in their war against America. A second assault against the victims of 09/11 is now taking place with President Obama’s decision to prosecute enemy combatant within the United States. Some reports now indicate that President Obama has been made aware of this poor decision. However, if he continues down this misguided paththe prosecution of Khalid Sheikh Mohammad (KSM) in New York may go down as one of the largest victories in Al Qaeda’s history.
It is cold comfort to hear the rumors that the trials will be moved from New York to somewhere else in America. These men — the 9-11 planners — should not be tried anywhere in the United States, and should remain at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba where they are now.
The decision to try KSM in New York is a catastrophic mistake that poses a complex maze of problems. Terrorism is fueled by their ability to spew their hate and to inflict pain upon their innocent victims and their families.
KSM has admitted his role in several terrorist attacks including the murder of more than 3,000 people on 09/11. One of his functions as a terrorist was as the chief of al Qaeda’s propaganda division. Thanks to President Obama’s decision KSM will now be rewarded with an international platform to spread his propaganda. This is undoubtedly a dream come true for the admitted mastermind behind 09/11.
President Obama has touted his decision to bring KSM to New York as an opportunity to show the world a fair and impartial judicial system. The problem is that he and Eric Holder have already declared that they believe KSM will be found guilty and despite the results of the trial, KSM will never be released. Ironically these statements have likened our courts to those found in a banana republic… not to mention that they have completely tainted the entire process.
President Obama and his Justice Department point to earlier terrorist prosecutions in our civilian courts. However, they fail to mention the security lapses, the circus like atmosphere and most important the breach and the leaking of vital national security secrets and counterterrorism tactics, as a result of those cases. Those trials proved to be a mistake and became the catalyst to utilize historically accepted military tribunals which have been used since President George Washington. Senator elect Scott Brown hit the nail on the head when he stated, “our Constitution and laws exist to protect this nation — they do not grant rights and privileges to enemies in wartime…In dealing with terrorists, our tax dollars should pay for weapons to stop them, not lawyers to defend them.”
“I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” This is the first line in the oath that both republicans and democrats swore to uphold. Protecting the American people should be their priority and time will tell if we have any leaders left in elected office.
President Obama appears to be tone deaf to the will of the American people, but what is more troubling is that he is tone deaf to the professionals and appointees which he placed in charge of our national security and intelligence agencies. It was stunning to learn that the KSM decision and the decisions surrounding the gross mismanagement of the Christmas day bomber were done behind closed doors and excluded, (Department of Homeland Security Secretary) Janet Napolitano, (National Intelligence Director) Dennis Blair, (chairman of National Counterterrorism) Michael Leitner, (FBI Director) Robert Mueller, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.
It appears that national security decisions have been based solely on self serving political calculations. One example is President Obama decision to eliminate the CIA’s interrogation unit and his commitment to develop and oversee a new High Value Interrogation Group (HIG). Despite President Obama’s promise and the clear need for this essential counterterrorism tool, a failed terrorist attack on Christmas day, exposed another major security failure. President Obama appears to be disconnected from the threats we face as a nation. Stop the politics and get to the business of protecting America!
As a 09/11 first responder, I urge President Obama to listen to the professionals he appointed and more importantly listen to basic common sense. Please reverse your decision to prosecute KSM in New York, as this is not only costly, but also reckless and dangerous. The next 09/11 is just around the corner and political decisions like this undoubtedly make us much more unsafe.
